Chatham Island warbler,
which I discovered is very different to the grey warbler from mainland
New Zealand. |
| Eco-Vista: Photography and Research aims to be the best source of bird photographs and images in New Zealand. Although just in the 'fledgling' stage I hope to be able to provide quality images of New Zealand birds, wildlife, and scenes for a variety of uses. The images you see on this website are available for sale as quality prints, for use in books and magazines. Please if you can't find what you need, email me with your request. |
Rediscovery of the 'extinct' New Zealand storm-petrel! Info and photos from the Jan 2006 catching trip here Information and photos of a species not seen in 150+ years! This photo to the right, taken by me, is one from the day on which we rediscovered the NZ storm-petrel off Whitianga - therefore making it the first ever taken of this bird alive! See info on the original resighting here |

| UPDATED November 2005 |
| Time is flying and yet again I find myself updating this page late as usual! I am writing this at 10:50pm whilst sitting in front of the fire at 'Taiko Camp' on the Chatham Islands. I am currently on the first shift, and tonight am in charge of monitoring the radio telemetry gear which will detect any of the 11 taiko currently fitted with radio transmitters. As these birds come back to their potential nest sites in the Tuku Nature Reserve, the tracking equipment should detect their signals, and I then need to get a 'fix' on where they are, and if they land, get a bearing so that we can try and track them to their burrows over the next few nights should they come in again. Exciting stuff! Unfortunately, I arrived two days too late to be involved with a successful night operating the catching lights, with the moon being too bright and full over the first few nights that I was here......... | |

Except, we operated the lights again between 22-25 Nov....and hit the jackpot....... The Chathams are an amazing place, with a really wild feel. In a way they remind me of the Falklands, with that same marine, isolated, and rugged atmosphere. This is my first trip here, and for three weeks I will be involved in the Taiko project as a Department of Conservation contractor, something I view as a real honour, and I am looking forward to the next two and a bit weeks. |
This year has gone so quickly, with so many things having happened. Early January saw me finally hand in my PhD thesis, with the oral exam and subsequent 'Pass' happening in May. It has taken until just recently to have the whole thing completed with suggested changes made and final printing and binding. Phew! In April Adel and I celebrated our one year wedding Anniversary at home with friends and family, making up for our rather isolated marriage in the Falklands last year. Much of the first half of the year was spent working for Department of Conservation at Boundary Stream Mainland Island, with my main work being bird oriented - 5-minute bird counts, New Zealand pigeon counts, and North Island robin surveys. However, as usual, help was needed with all aspects of the day to day running of the Reserve - from bait station replenishment to goat control. As the summer approached more time was spent taking photos, and gearing up for the coming guiding season with our bird guiding business - Wrybill Birding Tours, NZ - in its second summer. Trips to Tiritiri Matangi Island and Little Barrier Island to help with bird projects also kept me busy, as did a new contract conducting bird monitoring at two of the four proposed windfarms in the Titiokura Saddle area in western Hawkes Bay. I will be monitoring birds at the two Unison windfarms to determine their effects. Work on this website has again continued slowly - I have recently added a few more species to the gallery, and aim to include a few pages about me, and the trips and expeditions I have been involved in. The Research page is also due for an upgrade.....so watch this space. If you are interested in photos of New Zealand birds, then please email me with your requirements. I currently have a good selection of waders, seabirds, and am slowly building my passerine list. Let me know what you want, and I may have it. |
