As well as having an intense enthusiasm for birding and birds, I have had a love for photography since taking my first 'bird' pics at about the age of 8 with my Mum's old point and shoot 35mm Kodak. Technology has moved on a little from there, but until recently I used a Minolta 7000, bought new in 1989. I owned a couple of basic lenses, with an 80-200mm being the biggest. This camera did a fair bit of travelling and has only recently been retired. Despite the very basic AF system and electronics of this camera, it took some damn nice shots over the years. After deciding to move into photography a bit more seriously in 1999, I decided to upgrade my system, and in the end decided on a Canon EOS 5. I got a couple of basic lenses, with a 75-300mm this time affording a little bit more 'zoom' but often still too short for many subjects. I guess things really started to get serious when I found a 300mm f4 L IS second hand in a camera store. Not something often seen for sale second hand I snapped it up, and have been absolutely amazed at the results this lens has produced. The clarity is absolutely fantastic, being a pin-sharp lens, and the image stabilisation is great for those slower subjects in low light. Well, never satisfied with what you've got I guess is a truly human trait, and I'm afraid I seem to possess it a little more than I should....... Having seen the latest advances in Digital photography, I decided this really was an aspect of photography I should delve into, and taking the plunge purchased the Canon D60! This camera was absolutely fantastic, and since purchasing the body in August 2002, I haven't picked up my film camera body once (infact i sold it!). The results speak louder than words, and although there has been a huge learning curve (it ain't just picking up a camera and getting stunning results without a fair bit of work back in front of the computer) it has been more than worth it. Some purists may shy away from this form of photography, but hey, if you really know what your doing, using different film, film techniques, and filters, etc. you can push your film photography beyond the limits of a truly purest form. In Sept 2004 I moved to a 20D, and currently use that camera with the 300 f4 and a newly purchased 70-200mm f4.
